What is a Vasectomy?

The vas deferens is a small tube that takes sperm from each testis to the urethra. There is normally one on each side of the scrotum.

Vasectomy is a minor procedure in which both of these tubes are disconnected. It is one of the safest methods of contraception and is regularly performed by AUA urologists.

How is a Vasectomy performed?

Under general or local anaesthetic, two very small incisions are made in the scrotum. A short segment of each vas deferens is then removed and the cut ends are tied off, cauterized or both. The procedure takes less than twenty minutes and is performed as a day case.

Are Vasectomies reversible?

Although vasectomy is reversible, it should be regarded as a permanent form of contraception, as there is no guarantee reversal will be successful.

Importantly, a man is not confirmed sterilized until he has submitted a semen specimen for analysis which shows a zero sperm count. This is usually done approximately 8-10 weeks post-operatively. In this period, a man must continue to use contraception.

Does having a Vasectomy affect erections?

No, Vasectomy has no effect on erections.
