Urological Conditions & Services

General Urology
With the rapid proliferation of medical knowledge and constant advances in technology, surgical specialties such as urology have become more sub-specialised, so that urologists may have in-depth knowledge and skills in a particular area, as well as proficiency in general urology.
In addition to a high standard of clinical care, AUA urologists are committed to education and clinical research. This work is carried out in both the private and public health systems, as each urologist also holds a position at one or more of the large teaching hospitals in metropolitan Melbourne.

Urological Cancers
Surgical removal is often the best treatment for many urological cancers. There is usually a variety of techniques available to perform this surgery, such as via an open approach or with laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, with or without robotic assistance.
However, sometimes open surgery is the only appropriate option. This is usually the case if the tumour has spread to adjacent organs, or if complex reconstruction is required. Examples include very large kidney cancers with local spread into large veins, bladder removal with construction of a new bladder using the patient’s bowel, or testis cancer that has spread to lymph nodes in the abdomen.
AUA urologists are highly experienced in complex open cancer surgery.

Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine. In real terms, it is a bladder that ends up controlling your life, and can result in living in continual fear of urine leakage. Whilst not a life-threatening condition, it can have an enormous impact on an individual’s life, with a profound loss of quality of life.
The effects of incontinence for women and men are many, including severe embarrassment, restriction in daily activities and social life, as well as limiting the ability to work and travel. People suffering from incontinence bear additional heavy costs due to the use of protection devices such as incontinence pads to help deal with the problem.

Second Opinions
Patients can be reassured by having their case reviewed and discussed with a second consultant.
